La nota emittente Tv BBC ha chiesto a 209 critici di 43 paesi diversi di stilare una classifica dei loro 10 migliori film in lingua non inglese.
Dalle statistiche di questi 10 è risultato un elenco di 100 film di 67 registi, 24 paesi, 19 lingue. Il Francese è la lingua più presente con ben 27 film, seguita da 12 titoli in cinese mandarino. L’Italia è subito dopo, a pari merito con il Giappone, con 11 film su 100. I film italiani sarebbero potuti essere 12 se La battaglia di Algeri, co-produzione italiana/algerina, non fosse recitato in francese.

Iniziamo con i primi 10 in assoluto:

A farla da padrone il cineasta spagnolo Luis Buñuel con 5 film presenti, nonostante siano concentrati nella parte inferiore della classifica. Seguono con 4 film un quartetto di grandi maestri: Kurosawa, Bergman, Tarkovsky e il nostro Federico Fellini. Sorprende la massiccia presenza di Wong Kar-wai, regista classe ’58, con ben tre titoli nella lista, al pari di Godard, Mizoguchi e Kiarostami. Gli unici registi ad avere più di un film restano Dreyer, De Sica, Ozu, Renoir, Lang, Truffaut, Yang e i viventi Zhang Yimou e Ang Lee. I registi ancora attivi sono una ventina, di cui gli under 60 sono Del Toro, Cuaron, Mungiu, Farhadi, Park Chan-wook, Kátia Lund e il più giovane di tutti, nato nel 1973, Henckel von Donnersmarck.
